Product Description

6-layer PCB delivers superior technical performance compared with 4-layer PCB. Its inner layers are usually designed for power and ground planes for diverse electronic equipment and industrial applications, effectively reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk.

6-layer printed circuit boards are widely adopted in PCs, laptops and data storage hardware such as hard disk drives. They are also applied in fire alarm systems to boost system stability.

Besides consumer electronics, 6-layer PCBs are commonly found in optical receivers, mobile communication modules, GPS equipment, industrial control units and cardiac monitoring medical devices.

A 6-layer PCB shares a similar basic structure with a 4-layer PCB, but it adds two extra copper layers plus corresponding dielectric materials. In the classic stackup structure, the 2nd and 5th layers serve as solid ground planes, while the remaining layers are dedicated signal layers.

Basics of PCB Stackup

As high-speed circuits develop, PCB designs become increasingly complex. To avoid electrical interference, signal layers and power/ground planes must be separated, which brings multilayer PCB design.

Before multilayer PCB layout, engineers need to select PCB stackup based on circuit scale, board dimension and EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) requirements, to decide whether to adopt 4-layer, 6-layer or more layers. This is the core concept of multilayer board design.

Once layer count is confirmed, designers define layer sequence and signal routing allocation — this is PCB stackup selection. Stackup design is critical to PCB EMC performance. A well-designed 6-layer stackup can significantly mitigate EMI and crosstalk.

More layers do not always equal better performance. When defining a 6-layer stackup, multiple factors must be balanced. More layers facilitate wiring, yet raise production cost and manufacturing difficulty. For PCB fabricators like JQPCB, stackup symmetry is a key consideration during production. Experienced PCB designers analyze wiring bottlenecks after component pre-placement. After confirming layer quantity, reasonable layer ordering is essential. A standard 6-layer stackup follows these core rules:

  • The component top layer and soldering bottom layer are shielded by complete ground planes.
  • Avoid adjacent signal layers as much as possible.
  • All signal layers are placed next to ground planes where feasible.
  • Critical signals run adjacent to ground planes and do not cross split plane areas.

Stackup Editor Operation Tips

  • Right-click to run commands: Insert layer above / Insert layer below for adding layers (positive film or negative film). Use Move layer up / Move layer down to adjust layer sequence.
  • Double-click layer name for renaming. Standard naming: TOP, GND02, SIG03, SIG04, PWR05, BOTTOM for easy identification.
  • Set layer thickness based on stackup requirements.
  • Negative layer shrinkage parameters can be configured to meet design specifications.

6 Layer PCB Design Guidelines

  • Prevent two signal layers from being directly adjacent.
